a beautiful distraction

I know I haven't been on here in a while. It's not that I'm not seeing the beauty in the world, it's just that I've been blinded by the MOST BEAUTIFUL MISSION ever! Our family has decided to adopt!

So, for now, I'll be focusing my blogging efforts over at Nihao, Baby Shmoopie! Please come by and say HI! I'd like to return to this blog later, when that mission is all wrapped up (in my arms!).

Have a BEAUTIFUL day!

ps/ Ok ok ok... Let me leave you with ONE more beautiful thing to gaze upon.
The lovely work of fashion illustrator Paper Fashion. I've dropped some not-so-subtle hints for a lovely Mother's Day present. Fingers crossed!

See you over at Nihao!

Beautiful Music :: Something's Coming

I'm not going to start in on how West Side Story is the BEST musical ever. (...It is!)
I just want to share one of my favorite songs from it. It expresses how I'm feeling right now. Full of optimism and hope.

The video is subtitled, so let's all sing along, shall we? And a 5, 6, 7, 8...

Beautiful Words:: Three Cups of Tea

I love looking back over my life so far and seeing the land marks.  You know, the people, experiences, books, etc that have changed my life. I would not be who I am today or on my current path if not for these things. I get very excited about this.. I feel like I can see a glimpse of my future or destiny by looking back at these moments along my path. Do you know what I mean?

One of my all-time FAVORITE, life-changing books is Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. Like many of you, perhaps, it had been recommended to me on a number of occasions, but for some reason, it took me a while to pick it up. But, as soon as I did, I fell in LOVE!

In case you don't know, Three Cups of Tea is about a man (Greg Mortenson) who gets lost on a mountain climbing adventure, wanders into a village in Pakistan, and is nursed to health by the people there. When Greg learns that the children have no school and must resort to scratching math problems in the dirt with a stick, he boldly promises to build them a school! You see, he was just an ORDINARY man.  He wasn't the head of a NGO, he wasn't Mother Theresa, he had no money and no contacts. He was like ME! Ordinary! I won't spoil the story by telling you how he did it, but I will say it's pretty incredible and INSPIRING. At times it reads like fiction. (Like the love story of how he met his wife! ...sigh!)

There are so many wonderful lessons* that I gleaned from this book, but the one that has had the most impact on my life:  Ordinary people can do extraordinary things! Like my quote from the other day, Greg Mortenson inspires me to be the best I can be. Too often, I feel small and insignificant, but God willing, I might impact the world in a great way.

*lessons like: patience, perseverance, kindness, listening, developing relationships, etc!

Here's me with MY HERO, Greg Mortenson. I had the pleasure of hearing him speak in Cincinnati and he signed a "young readers" version of Three Cups of Tea for my son. I was beyond excited to see him and he was, as expected: humble, sweet and gracious. Almost shy. Pretty amazing considering the man is changing the world and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize!

Have you read Three Cups of Tea?  What did you think?
What books have changed your life?

Beautiful Words: Mark Twain

one of my all time favorite quotes....

“Really great people make you feel that you, too, can become great.” -Mark Twain.

I'm starting a busy weekend  tomorrow (a jewelry convention), so this is all I have to share for now. Next week, stop back to hear about one of these "great people" that inspire me!! And MORE!

Have a beautiful weekend!

Beautiful Fashion :: Polyvore

It's been a while since I've played on this site. Mostly because of my dismal laptop battery life... I can't sit on the couch and play on it while Shmoopie watches sports without dragging out my power cord, moving the couch to get to the outlet, blah blah blah. But, I've decided that I'm just going to have to get over it because Polyvore is such a FUN site. Such a wonderful creative outlet. I get to play with designer, fantasy fashion without having to fork out the big bucks! It's like Barbies* for grown ups. Sort of.
Here are some of my favorite "sets" from the past. I should curl up (baby, it's cold outside) and create some more!

*so, when I was a kid, I used to go through fashion magazines and recreate looks for my Barbies using her clothes and by stitching together bits and scraps of fabric. I still do this... but on a larger (and realistically proportioned) scale!

I hope you're having a BEAUTIFUL day!

Beautiful Home :: Lonny Magazine

Today, I'm at home with a sick little boy. While cuddling on the couch, he likes to watch cartoons, and I love flipping through magazines. I found Lonny Magazine through one of my favorite, beautiful blogs {this is glamorous}. I "flipped" through the pages on my iPod (though the images were a little small!) and had to share here. This online magazine is FULL of beautiful interiors. I could live in every one! I love getting ideas to use in my own home. Even if it's just a color palette, an arrangement of beautiful objects... or just inspiration to de-clutter and organize! Here are just a FEW of the images that inspired me:
If you know me and have been in my house... you know I love WHITE! All shades of it. Now, a white sofa would NOT be practical in our house, but I love lots of white accessories. How about those window treatments? And the use of warm, wood accents? So cozy.

So, I'm sitting at MY desk.... looking at THIS desk and shakin' my head. As soon as I'm done writing this, guess what I'll be doing?!

Yay for orange! It's such a perfect pop of color in an otherwise neutral room. Orange makes for great fashion accessories also. One of my most favorite possessions is an ORANGE patent leather Coach clutch that my husband bought for me at the Venetian in Macau, China. I carry it with any outfit and not only does it add a great pop, but it's also a sweet reminder of that amazing trip.

I hope you're having a beautiful day!
